You can throw a jig almost whenever, try to Match the color of your jig to the baits around where you’re fishing I’ve always had luck with a white jig plastics since it looks like a basic bait fish but it all depends on where you’re fishing and what you’re fishing for really, for weight it depends on where your fishing how deep it is how fast the current is etc

  2. I think most articles and bait shops overcomplicate colors to sell (duh). Whenever fish is biting heavy I tend to mix jigs to see if there’s a notable difference and I’ve never noticed anything. Neutral, natural or fire tiger, they all seem to catch fish if presented the same. If I were to start over I would stick to three colors: dark (black/motoroil) light (white/shiner) and natural (whatever bait fish looks like). You want something to switch between for the good juju.

Also I never caught anything on jigs previously but this summer I’ve had great luck with jigs, if you’re fishing bass this might not apply but what seems to work for me is smaller lures and smaller hooks. I’m almost always fishing black/white 4gr. 1/0 jigheads, I’ll go up in size for pike or if I’m fishing deeper or want to throw farther into wind etc. I’ve also noticed I have most luck fishing shallows (1-4m) with jigs. Try to go real slow and don’t be afraid to let it sit. I’m always aiming for prominent features like lilypads, right next to weeds, rocks and docks. If I’m fishing midday in blazing sun I think I’ve noticed strikes happening right at the edge of shadows so I tend to fish on the shadowy side of a lake if possible. Perch and pike seem to enjoy chilling in the shadows and i wouldn’t think other predators would be much different. Hope it helps!
