I was scrolling through instagram yesterday and came across this video, and I was disturbed at the sight of this goldfish, and so were many others. The comments were filled with how this type of breeding in goldfish is cruel, and one user commented and made a very good point she said "People advocate for the cruel breeding of dog breeds, but I think we should start shifting gears to fish because what the actual hell" and I 100% agree with that.

Pugs for example they have breathing issues, mobility issues, skin fold infections, and eye issues. All of this caused because we want it to look a certain way.

Something has to be done about the breeding practices of this hobby. Why would anyone create such a fish that struggles daily just to live life for our viewing pleasure? I've seen so many goldfish breeds that are so unethical. Nothing should have to go through a life of struggling and challenges just to do it's day to day things. This hobby has its ups and downs. This is definitely a downside of this hobby.

We came together to stop Walmart from selling fish due to how the fish were kept so what's stopping us from coming together to stop unethical breeding practices in the hobby?

This is to not attack on the poster. This is just to voice my opinion about some breeding practices that go on in the hobby.

  1. If people let it happen and adore pugs, they will most definitely let it happen to fish. A large problem is that people don’t view fish as animals.

    “It’s just a fish.”
    Some will disagree; https://injaf.org/

I understand the concern and there’s no way I’ll be keeping a terribly deformed goldfish myself, but welfare of pets seems to be of low priority to people.

People would feel awful seeing a neglected pet, but there isn’t the same kind of mindset towards unethical breeding for some reason. It’s worse than neglect because the poor fish never had a chance to live a proper life in the first place.
