Trying to decide on a sling pack. Been running a large fanny pack for years. And I’m tired of it pulling my pants down. Looking to try a sling pack to carry a little more gear but mainly more comfortably. I don’t have a shop near me where I can go check these out in person. Has anyone looked at both these and decided one over the other? I prefer to have the sling on my right shoulder if that makes a difference. But I know the Patagonia strap can be used in either orientation.

  1. For comfortability I’d honestly stay away from slings. When your bending over or climbing over log and it’s shifting around, not great. Backpack imo way to go. But between those two, Patagonia.

Ill always go for backpack over sling too

Salt or fresh? If salt then Fishpond sling. So easy to rotate the sling and tie a new fly. Completely dry in the surf. Maine Guide here, and compared others salt packs in the field. Just fyi if you are leaning toward the Patagucci fanny pack for fresh (and perhaps others from that maker), note that small x leaders & tippets (less than 4x) are easily caught in the YKK zippers when you are changing tippet or flies. Trust me, it gets annoying. Surprised they never fixed this. Every minute your fly is not in the water a fish is not seeing it. Tight lines.

I have the Patagonia sling and I’ve been pretty happy with it so far. It has a good layout as far as internal pockets and the strap is comfortable. My only gripes are the net holder kind of sucks at least with the net I have it seems to slide out easily, and the water bottle sleeve could be a little bigger. Otherwise it’s a great bag. I had looked at the same Simms sling but Patagonia seemed to be a little less bulky and better quality.

I got the simms pack for free from a friend and I love it. I’ve tried other slings that just don’t sit right on my shoulders but this one is great

  7. My Simms sling fell apart after a year. My Patagonia vest is still perfect 4 years in. I think Patagonia built tougher.
