I’ve always had relatively cheap spinning rods as I’ve always predominantly used casting rods. As I get older I love spinning rods & really just switching it up more than anything. Got a president at the end of last season but between work & other preoccupations never got around to setting it up til this year. IMO I do not have it on best rod for this particular reel – however I don’t believe that’s the problem. Currently have 20lb. Big Game mono on it just not sure if I put too much line, not enough or just don’t have the drag set properly. Any advice, critique or suggestions are much appreciated.

It might be too thick for the reel. I have multiple presidents and never had an issue unless the mono I was using was really thick. I usually run braid for this purpose

Usually it happens when you start reeling without any tension on your line. When you start reeling it’s important to hold your line a bit to be sure your line is reeling as planned.

  3. Manually flip your baler before you start to reel, I have had a similar issue that has almost totally gone away by doing this.
