Pulled this bass in friday afternoon, as I was unhooking i noticed this 2nd hook, deep into its stomach. After some pondering, i unhooked my line and threw him back complete with 1st hook. I figured if he managed to fish me that hard then hes still going strong with it.

Would you have tried to remove the hook, or tossed him back like I did?

  1. Push the point and barb through. Grab the point with a pair of locking forceps. Use the D-BARB tool to cut the hook shank and pull out both parts of the hook.

  2. if legal eat it. seems to be past the throat which for me is a reason to cull a fish and eat it

  3. You did the right thing since the fish wasn’t a legal fish. The hook will dissolve soon enough. Trying to remove the hook that deep will kill the fish.

I would have cut the hook and just taken the loss of gear while releasing the fish.

Just flip the hook, use pliers carefully through the gills to flip it, then pull it out straight through the mouth. It’s not hard after a couple of tries.

Reach through the gills with needle nose and grab the hook eyelet. Pull it through the gills. Effectively flipping it upside down. This will gently back the hook out the gut. Then you can just pull the hook base out normally
