Caught my first fish today. Not a big fish but I'm super proud. I do have a question tho. I got an eagle fenwick rod with pflueger president reel with 8lb mono line. (based on reccommendations from you guys) and i can only seem to cast around 40'. I tried a couple different lures and a texas rig with 1/8 oz weight. i assume my technique is off but idk if theres an issue with my set up. My friend also just started fishing and was having the same issue. Neither one of us know what were doing. Its the blind leading the blind, but hey, were catching fish

40′ sounds decent for someone who just caught their first fish.
The only gear issue I can guess based off your description is if your rod is too stiff/heavy for a 1/8oz lure. You should be able to feel it flex as you make your cast. The rod probably has the suggested maximum/minimum lure weight printed on it, and if not you could look the specific model up online and see.
My guess is you just need to go fishing more often (oh no!) to get more practice casting.
