First summer ever owning a boat and looking to get into fishing more. I have a Shakespeare Ugly stick and the reel shoes rated for 6lb, 8lb or 10lb line. I’m in Wisconsin on the Mississippi river. Would like to catch bass and a lot of different fish. 10lb will be more then enough for bass, catfish, musky right? If it’s not on the reel I can’t use bight lb line? Is just clear monofilament line good for a beginner to use? It’s also got a metal “clasp” on the line (almost like a very small carabiner) that you can take off and put on different lures super easy. What’s that thing called?! That’s very beneficial to switch up your lures without having to tie each one? Lastly, would like to start out catching largemouth bass, surface lures is what I would want correct? There were so many options of random things at the store.. overwhelming. What do I look for or get? Thanks for any insight!

So for bass it’s gonna depend on season and where you’re fishing for them. I suggest checking out some bass fisherman on YouTube to help get an idea of your situation as it’s definitely overwhelming. I’ve fished most of my life and just got into bass last summer and felt wildly out of my element lol. For musky I would get a separate rig specifically for that. Beefy pole beefy reel beefy line. The leader is the metal thing you’re talking about and will be super useful for musky . I would tie right to your line for bass , this will give you good sensitivity in your line and let you know when you’re getting a bite and help with your hook set. Tyler’s reel fishing is an awesome channel for learning about bass fishing.
