I took two poles with me and laid one on the ground behind me, then went to cast the other *really hard*. Hooked the pole behind me and sent it flying into the water.
Thankfully it stayed hooked and I was able immediately reel it back in. All the while, my son was looking at me like I was an idiot, which isn’t too far from the truth.
