I’m unsure if my boy Hibiscus has some mild fin rot going on, I’ve been out of town on and off for the past few weeks and my parents have been feeding him for me, but I’m worried that the long strands (?) on his tail fins are the start of fin rot.

He’s grown quite a bit since I first got him back in late May. Currently he is in a 6 gallon tank with plenty of fresh plants, a filter, no tank mates, and appropriate PH/nitrate/temperature levels.

If this does look like fin rot, what should I do?

It does appear to be so, but you’ve caught it early which is great. My method has never failed me! It may seem overkill to others, but I’ve found it’s better safe than sorry and it’s better to be quick and not let it get bad trying all the random methods.

50% water change. Treat with seachem prime and add aquarium salt per the directions and remove any carbon you may have.

Then treat with a 5 day course of Maracyn2 paired with a 5 day course of ich-x (you can treat these two meds at the same time). 1tsp of ich-x per 10gal every day for the same 5 days you’re treating with the maracyn2 – no water changes during those 5 days. Then on day 6 do a 50% change (once again adding seachem prime and aquarium salt for the amount of water you’re replacing) and add back carbon if you have it. This will cover most all bacteria including what’s causing the finrot and any parasites that can’t be seen.

    Good luck!
