Recently went deep sea fishing on a charter for the first time. While out, we got caught in a storm. I have no point of reference for what is normal or dangerous, so I’m curious for opinions of experienced deep sea fishermen. This was on a 37 foot boat. Based on this video clip, how large were those swells? Would you call this a dangerous situation?

  1. I’ve been out on sunny days with rougher waves. Any expierenced captain wouldn’t be sweating this at all.

  2. Videos never do chop justice but that doesn’t look dangerous to me. Maybe 3-5 foot?

If you think that’s rough – You picked the wrong sport.

Been in conditions like that in 14’ skiff, by myself 20 miles offshore.

  4. That’s a squall, and that is just a bit of chop. It takes some hours for wind to build waves where they would be concerning to a small boat, and that looks to be bigger than a small boat.

Thats pretty chill for a storm. The waves rolling slowly and not jarring you. Boats like that fish on normal days that are that rough. Its best to avoid storms because they can get worse unexpectedly, but that is pretty mild.
