I recently went to a family wedding in Wisconsin. We rented a house that was on a small canal connecting to a larger lake. The water in the canal was about 3 feet deep in the middle.

There were some big carp and bass, as well as some large bluegill in the middle that I could see. But it was much more fun to just catch the little bluegill, redear, and pumpkinseed right at the dock. No reeling needed, just 3 feet of line, a tiny hook, and a worm. Caught maybe 40 fish ranging from 1 to 4 inches. It was exciting for my kids (4 and 5 years old) and I didn't need to worry about them snagging me or each other with a cast.
