Hello all, been away/offline for a while . Fishing has been amazing in greater Yosemite and guiding has been very busy. I haven’t been able to fish as much as I like with all the guiding, still scratching the itch here and there but I digress.

It’s a very special fishery where you have a good chance of catching a 10 pound trout, even from shore in some cases.

I was blessed to have a mentor named Michael Gover, who has fished the areas since the 80s. Being his old school, there was no bobbers or “bobber-casting” as he calls it, allowed and we were stripping streamers all day, every day.

I made 3 trips to the lake, there were days when I didn’t get a single grab and days when I landed three fish and missed fish in the 15 to 20 pound range.

One of the big ones that got away was absolutely a summit strain. It was a massive red firetruck. Every time I got it into view and close to landing range, it would nearly rip the rod from my hand and dive back down to the bottom and start peeling line. Mike estimated it was in the 15 range.

Here are some photos of the different strains. I’m wondering if there are any wild reproduction or if the species ever interbreed? I’ve heard some guides say there is still wild reproduction in the Truckee but it’s very limited. There were some that looked like Pilot peak that were more colorful with red hues prevalent, so I wonder if they interbreed.

You see the Adipose fin clearly intact on the summit pictures. Have any here caught summits that were clipped?
