Now that they are grown and moved out, my wife and I are going to start fishing together. I haven't been since the kids were little, and I've always wanted to learn how to use a baitcaster. I found a starter combo, and want to set it up to better my odds at success.

Is this little Quantum DX300CX worth using as a starter? (Pics) It only has 3 magnets, but I figured $20 was worth a try, and you can never have too many rods. I can find no info on it. I'm guessing it's no longer made.

While I understand the dials for the brakes, spool tension, and drag, but what is the little chrome slide button under the line guide for?

Any pointers on a good line for beginner baitcasters would be welcome as well.

Thanks

If you’re talking about the button under where your thumb goes, you push it down when you cast, kind of like a bail on a spinning reel.

I’m new to using a bait caster and I’ve found that using braided line greatly reduces backlash
