Went to walmart yesterday and bought the basics so that I can start taking the family fishing. We'll only be bank fishing for now. The closest lake has mainly bass, sunfish, perch and some catfish. So I had a few questions on what to do next or if I should buy anything else.

  1. What kind of hook setup should I use if I want to bass fish with soft plastics?

  2. How hard is it to switch from bass to catfish on the same pole? Like what adjustments need to be made as far as weights and hooks, if any.

  3. Whats the best setup for a kids pole? Hook, bobber, weight?

  4. What supplies do you recommend based on my current tackle?

I added pics of the equipment I have in case that helps. Only thing not pictured are some ozark fishing pliers.

Thank you in advance for any advice, it's greatly appreciated.

depending on the bass and catfish species, i wouldnt even attempt either with this setup. that being said its definitely still doable.

kids pole, id do a deep shank hook, like 1/8 splitshot, and a float. use redworms, wax worms, or panfish powerbait. catch loads of bluegill.

you could try for bass with the gx2, with a larger hook or a jighead, just simply ran through the top of one of those tubes. caught a lot of largies doing that.

tight lines, best of luck. make some memories, thats all that matters.

The most fun you can probably have with the whole family is worm and bobber fishing

And maybe throw a worm on the bottom for a catfish too, so you can pull up a variety of fishes- that’d be cool to me as a kid seeing how many different fish we could catch

Depending on how old the kids are I would not even consider you yourself fishing. By time I got my bait in the water they needed something or something was wrong. I’d just focus on them to start. I would use bobber hook and live bait. Or can get power baits.

Short attention spans = spinner fishing

    Patient: coarse bait fishing

    Unnaturally gifted: Fly fishing
