Super new to fishing and know absolutely nothing about it. Would like if someone could tell me why my pole wont cast or reel. It is an ozark trail pole.

the wire loop that goes around the spool is called the bail.

at the top of the bail in this picture is the roller bearing (that wheel thing).

the line must go up and over that roller bearing. cut your line and thread it back over.

you have to pass the line under the bail. this is why you can’t reel in.

  3. Due to the mechanics of the roller rotating around the fixed spool- a common problem new anglers have with “spinning” reel is loops and wind knots. Which eventually turn into giant bird nest. The bail wire will automatically close when you turn the handle. Do not use this feature. Always close it by hand. Ensuring that the line is semi tight above the reel each time after you close the bail and before reeling will help you avoid said issues. Raise the rod tip and quickly tug the line upward with your hand that closed the bail before reeling. Good luck.
