I’ve had these Java ferns in my tank for probably six months. My tank is very well cycled. Why are they turning black and some of the leaves dissipating? I fertilize my tank once a week. No aquarium salt. 12 hours of light a day
This is how Java fern reproduces. As you can see on those black leaves there is new offspring with new roots.
I the real world the water will take this offspring with it (cause the leave will rot away) and the fern can get to new places.
I your tank you have to take the leave and plant the new roots on a place you want it.
The black leave is eaten by snails, shrimp or algaeeater fish. If you don’t have these it will just rot.
Edit: some will say it might be potassium or iron shortage: this looks different!
Then you will see brown circles with black centres.

In your case those leaves are just old.
