Had the pleasure of spending 4 nights on a tiny island in the East China Sea. As much as I tried, I couldn't really find any information about fly fishing out there except for one Instagram account I found. I knew there were trevally, triggerfish, and indo-asian permit and really wanted to give it a go. The island was only about 10-15 miles across so I rented a bike and just explored as much as I could. The humidity here is about 80% and the "feels like" temp is 109F with a UV index of 11. So it's pretty brutal lol. Even biking a few miles was tough in the middle of the day.

Day 1 I biked across a lot of the island and tried to scout some places that looked promising on Google maps satellite. I didn't know what the tides situation would be but I started exploring right at high tide and that was not promising at all. Just way too much water and was rough out. I did some blind casting but without any luck. By the time low tide was hitting I had already biked about 20 miles and was absolutely exhausted from the jet lag so decided to call it and get some food and crash.

Day 2 I had a better plan. I knew where I wanted to fish but wanted to wait for low tide. I woke up before sunrise (because of the jet lag) so went to the beach and just blind casted some more. No luck. Took it easy until low tide around 3pm and biked to the spot I found. I was pumpedddd because I was seeing some activity in the water. Ended up seeing some GTs crushing bait fish and casted right into them and landed 2! Was an absolute blast on my 8wt. I consider this my favorite fish I've ever caught now. Probably because of all the work and exploring that led up to it.

Day 3: I did end up finding a guide in Tokyo that set me up with a trip down here. This was the Instagram account I mentioned. We were fishing for permit and drum. Saw zero permit and had a ton of shots at drum but they were so spooky I could not get any to bite. Regardless was a great day and landed 2 baby grouper and a little wrasse.

Overall, some of the best 3 days of my life. Flyfishing truly is a passion. Thanks for reading.
