I would get him a bigger tank, 5 g minimum. My betta went from a 5.5 g to a 45 g. Also I would recommend either silk fake plants, or live plants. The plastic plants if they’re pointed can rip your betta’s fins. It happened with my Half moon betta’s fin, and I removed all the fake plants. I’ve had a betta for 3 months, so I’m also kind of new (＾∇＾)

If you get a bigger tank, I definitely recommend getting live plants! If you have Facebook, the marketplace is a great place to start as the sellers usually sell them for a fraction of the price. I would also take advantage of bucket sales Petco has from time to time — you fill up a decent sized Petco bucket and everything in there is 20% off!!!
Also a filter with low flow and a water heater would be good too!
