I know very little about salt water stuff but I did find this rod and reel at goodwill for 10 bucks. Can someone help me figure out what I got?

  1. You got a very good deal for an off-shore light trolling setup, provided the reel internals aren’t junk.

  2. Redo the guides to something conventional and you got a Damm good all purpose bottom fishing setup. Cod, haddock chunking for tuna etc

Thats a Penn Senator 6/0. Super reliable work horse reel. It’ll probably still work great, maybe take it apart, clean it and lube and grease it. They are very simple and great to learn reel maintenence on. They still make them as well and there’s decent aftermarket so parts are available. Only thing is they have a low gear ratio so they have good torque, but slow on the retrieve.

Also roller guides are great for mono, but I would maybe use a different rod if you plan on using braid.

  4. A nice trolling/jigging rig. Hit the handle with some spar varnish and a rubber chair tip on the end. Clean and line the reel (YouTube) and you got a great deal.
