Today I was walking the beach in SWFL with my 8wt sight fishing for snook. Tarpon are also starting to migrate so I am scanning from shoreline to horizon and about 40yds in front of me this full sized adult manta ray breaches at least 10ft in the air and comes crashing through the surface like a Volkswagen head on. I got the front full wingspan view. It was at least 6ft wide and its leap was effortless, the hang-time was breath taking and the splash was massive. It captured the power, grace and mass of these great animals.

I have seen many mantas before but usually way off in the distance or half the size. Today’s manta breach is one of the coolest things I have seen while fishing. It is in the top 2-3 things at least. What are the coolest things you have seen?

  1. Substantially-Ranged on

I was fishing a large western river early in the morning and I was joined by an otter. He surfaced down stream from me and kept coming up and checking me out. I didn’t catch anything at that hole, but he was pretty awesome.

  2. Having a black bear pop out of the rhodedendrum less than 10 ft away from me while walking to a fishing spot in the smokies. It was small enough I was more concerned where Mom was.
